Palatka-St.Augustine, FL 44.5 mi.

The final day!!!
3,178 mi. Total
Early start for the last day
The arrangement was for us to arrive at the St. John fire department at about 40 mi. out by 10:30 in order to line up for our police escort to arrive at Anastasia State Park by 11 am.
Helen at the rest stop
Although we departed at various times, I think it was the first time we were all at the SAG stop at the same time.
Our route took us past many highlights of St. Augustine, across the lion bridge and finally into Anastasia State Park to the pavilion where our friends and family were waiting.

It was cool and raining so people were hard to identify. Finally I spotted Richard and rode up to him. He asked if I'd recognized anyone else and I hadn't because I'd been looking for him. I was totally shocked when my mother and Lenni and Erwin came walking over.

Then we walked across the beach to dip our front wheels and complete our journey. We took many pictures and had a celebratory picnic in the pavilion which was good because the trip ended as it had begun; an unusually cool & rainy day in a typically warm, sunny locale.
Later that evening there was a lovely banquet at a nearby restaurant for the riders. Two of the three injured riders were able to join us; Bell had arrived in Palatka, and Nancy surprised us all at the park. Pat had been hoping to come but it just wasn't good timing for her arm.

Most left Friday morning and the rest are slowly disappearing.
Its hard to sum it up but I'll say it was a great trip; we rode many long hard days through hot & cold & wind, on some dangerous, miserable roads and some quiet, scenic, pleasant ones as well. We learned that we can do more than we'd thought.
We talked, listened, laughed, and learned a lot about one another; like pealing an onion, mile by mile, day by day, we became closer and formed close friendships.
For two months we were in "Bike World" where almost every waking hour was focused on riding and getting us and our bicycles prepared for the next ride. No one would believe how we spent our precious little free time cleaning, adjusting, repairing our bikes, washing clothing, writing blogs, and triple checking weather and wind direction (almost always out of the east to our dismay).
When I look at the US map and realize how far we rode I am still amazed. I am thrilled that I had the opportunity and the strength to have done it, but I'm ready to be done and am looking forward to going home.

It was not too warm and overcast all day. A rather straight ride with no memorable features and few food options.
The highlight of the day was arriving at our hotel in Palatka and seeing our surprise visitor. Bell from Colorado, who was injured the first day, came to be with us for the final day. She is almost 100% and plans to do the ride next year.
The other highlight of my day was trying out Moira's bicycle; my birthday will be here in just over half a year, hint, hint!
Our last on the road dinner was wonderful and we received our final cue sheets and information that require an early start. The wolves will not be leaving at 6:30am but 7ish.

A short, fast, easy ride with Ann to Perry by noon. About 1.5 mi. from the hotel I got my eighth and final flat, I hope. This time it was a nail into the sidewall, I pulled it out with my small pliers and replaced the tube. It takes me only around five minutes now so then we carried on. Next it seemed to me that the bike wasn't shifting well and by the time we got to Subway I'd determined that my rear derailleur cable had snapped. When we arrived at the hotel I searched out Carol and fortunately she had a cable for me. We hunted for the broken nub, flipped over the bike and it magically appeared. I removed it and replaced the cable so I once again have all 20 gears. Yea!

Marilyn makes pancakes

No waffles today, we discovered our first pancake machine! You just push a button and in about 30 seconds out they come out.

This morning we had great fun racing up and down hills and long straight sections as fast as we could. We rode on beautifully paved roads with rolling hills through scenic countryside.

We took a ten mi. detour to visit Wakulla Springs SP for lunch and a scenic boat ride. It felt good to get off the bikes, eat somewhere nice and see something different. The lake is fed by several underwater springs and remains at 68F year round. On the boat ride we saw lots of birds, fish, turtles, and alligators. We learned that Tarzan and The Creature from the Black Lagoon were filmed there.
Wakulla Lodge & Inn

We're staying at the Crawfordville Inn for our last rest day before our last four days of riding.

Not so flat Florida
After breakfast we backtracked a bit to ride scenic roads before getting back onto US 90. No wind to talk about so it felt rather effortless despite some hills. Because of the time change it was suddenly lunch time so we stopped in Chatahoochee for a quick bite. Then we stopped for a late second lunch and ice cream in Quincy before heading to the hotel.

This could be a lot of places

Crestview-Marianna, FL 93.5mi.

Today was known as 90 on 90; ninety miles on US 90. It was more pleasant than it sounds and than I'd expected, it was the old road that parallels Interstate 10. There was a decent shoulder the surface was very good, wind wasn't a factor, not too hilly and it was ok scenery.

After 33 mi. we stopped in DeFuniak Springs which is a very pretty town with nice old houses built around a naturally round spring fed lake.

At 66mi. we stopped in Chipley and met up with others for lunch at the 1901 Gallery and Cafe; a great place that made us feel very welcome.
