We departed the Fairfield Inn and wound our way through residential areas. We passed through Scottsdale, Tempe and Mesa, which I consider to all be Phoenix, which actually started 30 mi. west of town yesterday. I think that Phoenix is really about half of Arizona. We rode through some very nice neighborhoods and others where we would only stop for red lights. Our favorite part of the ride was a four mile stretch on a bike path which connected several parks. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and everyone and their dog was out having fun. Our last 6 mi. was on Hwy.60; we were anticipating a rough shoulder with rumble strips, but were pleasantly surprised that it had been recently paved. There was bumper-to-bumper traffic for the motor vehicles due to a Renaissance Festival, but we just zipped by them as we went down the shoulder. There were some interesting outfits to be seen at our hotel because of the Festival, as I later figured out! At our evening map meeting we were warned about some steep climbs tomorrow so it should be an interesting day.
